Diagnostic Approach towards Meningitis

Solution

The diseased state of meningitis is defined as the inflammation of membranes involving the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms associate with the disease are prolonged fever, headache, vomiting, convulsions, altered sensorium etc. Varied diagnostic approaches are known for the diagnosis of meningitis, but mostly have few lacunae. Like initial signs and symptoms, which also associated with other diseased forms, secondly the aspiration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which itself is a very painful invasive procedure followed with delayed diagnosis using culture of CSF and at-times led to false positive. In order to overcome the delayed and inaccurate diagnosis, metabolomic study using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) i.e. to identify and explore the metabolites termed as biomarkers were observed in body fluids. The study was carried out in CSF, serum and urine of a small cohort of patients of bacterial and tubercular meningitis, which deciphered the metabolites altered in the differentiation of the groups.

Advantages of this solution

The study in this forte was a baby step or in the experimental phase, therefore less findings are available. The present study was attempt towards a prompt and accurate diagnosis of meningitis foe better patient management. Following are the advantages of the study: 1) Requires less time. The culture and sensitivity requires minimum 24 hours to 72 hours, though using metabolomic analyses the cases could be confirmed within 4-5 hours. 2) It provides prompt and accurate diagnosis. 3) Avoids painful lumbar puncture. Furthermore, it may also led non-invasive diagnosis using urine samples. 4) Once the method could bring into commercial basis, it will be economical.
